MAX, one of Japan's finest female quartets.
One day a few years ago while walking through a shopping mall I was struck by a very familiar intro to a song that I thought I knew very well....as it turned out there was a talent contest being held by a local school in the mall's center stage area and I remember thinking Wow! they're going to dance to a song by MAX!! However when the vocals began I must have had the most puzzled look on my face because while the music was definitely MAX's single "Bara iro no hibi" ("Rose colored days"), the vocals were by a male group that I didn't recognize at the time. A few weeks had passed with this thought stuck in the back of my mind before I had a chance to ask a friend if they knew if MAX's single "Bara iro no hibi" was a cover song by a male group and luckily they knew the answer as it had been really bugging me! It turns out that this song is indeed a cover of an N'sync song (edit: thank you Tiggerkun for correcting me! :) It's a Backstreet Boys song! I actually like them better than N'sync. Sorry that I got them mixed up :P )....ah I can't remember their title at the moment (edit: Again thank you Tiggerkun. The song title is "Larger Than Life." :) ) but in my sad defense I've never been a fan of their music. :P "Bara iro no hibi" is available to listen to a bit later in this post and I'm sure someone will know the name of that N'sync song! (edit: Backstreet Boys song! :P)
A bit more on the origin of MAX can be found in a post from about 3 weeks ago which covered Amuro Namie as they were originally known as the Super Monkeys. While their role had become that of back-up dancers to Amuro Namie and with their popularity growing, the departure from Amurochan was a very natural transition as they seemed to have outgrown their role and needed an outlet to showcase their vocal talents as well. Amuro Namie's single "Stop the music" which was released on July 24th, 1995 would be the last which included the Super Monkeys and as if testing the waters, 2 months prior the Super Monkeys now known as MAX had released their debut single "Koi suru Velfarre Dance~saturday night~." Widespread success wouldn't arrive until their 3rd single titled "Tora Tora Tora" was released and from here the group really came into their own with blossoming personalities and a distinct vocal sound that would remain through the years to come despite the changes in musical styles which were a reflection of the changing times. "Tora Tora Tora" was released amidst the techno craze which was sweeping Japan at the time and it really held a similarity to Amurochan's parallel releases but it wouldn't take long for MAX to find their own sound musically and despite their genre being described as dance/pop/R&B there is a definite distinctness to their style and even more so in their highly recognizable vocals. While MAX's quartet of members all sing, it must be pointed out that Mina & Reina are regarded as their lead vocalists as they hold the dominate solo and key vocal lines in all of their early works. However this would all change in 2002 when Mina departed the group and even with the addition of a new member their release activity has remained scarce since. I'm a fan of MAX's earlier works and my collection includes their first 20 singles and first 5 albums. As a symbol of their close ties to Amuro Namie, all of the members in MAX are also from Okinawa including the newest member who joined after Mina's departure.
The original members of MAX are: Making a good first impression is important and I hope that choosing to list my favorite MAX song of all time, "mum", first is a good idea! Whether or not you choose to listen to any of the other MAX songs that I've linked below please listen to this one as it's such a beautiful song. "mum" was released as an album only track on MAX's "Emotional History" compilation Cd.
Click here to listen to "mum."
"Isshou ni..." is a great Christmas song which is subtle in its approach as it may not sound like a Christmas song right away. Another beautiful song and I hope you listen to this one too!

And here's the N'sync song (edit: Backstreet Boys' song; haha I'm so goooooofy!!) that I mentioned earlier. Hmmm...anyone know its original title? Even though I'm not an N'sync fan (edit: Backstreet Boys; but I actually like some of their music! Still not a fan of N'sync though) by any means this song is soooooo catchy!! But I'd rather listen to MAX singing it!! :P

And lastly here's a taste of Japanese techno! MAX's 3rd single, the one that started their success! :) Besides it being a techno song you'll really notice a large difference in other aspects regarding their approach and production as this one goes back a lot further than the previous 3 songs that I've listed here. Enjoy! :)

take care, tig
I wasn't a fan of N'Sync at all, and I only liked one or two Backstreet Boys songs, so I wouldn't know at all. -Good thing Tiggerkun was able to field this one for me!
Your extensive collection continues to impress me!
Feel free to add it for A/B comparison to Bara Ira No Hibi if you like. ^^
I don't know many of their songs but I really love "Shape of My Heart" and was just wondering if you've heard it before. The lyrics are perfect! :)
That's it! I've seen the shape of your heart - Like that scene in Amelie!! :)
I like all music that has great harmonies, and many boy and girl groups are like that. N'Sync has some great songs too, and so do The Spice Girls (haha) and from Ireland, The Corrs. I like Jack Johnson from Hawaii too! So many I love. ^^
Now let me show you the shape of my heart
But this Blackberry video demo of features is just too awesome! :) HERE
Ah a couple of friends at work have "Rock Band" and I think they're addicted! When they come to work with sore hands and sleepy eyes I know what they were up to the night before!! I've never played it before but I wonder if it may just be easier to play an actual guitar instead...although I'm so out of practice. After injuring my left pinkie trying to play basketball my guitars have gone into storage. I've actually sold most of them but I still have 4. My John Lennon Rickenbacker is my most prized although I've played it the least...it's like I was preserving it even though I never intend to sell it ever! Did I mention that I LOVE THE BEATLES?!!!!
Another talent! I didn't know that you play guitar too. :) Wow, moonlight serenades I'm thinking... to... Tiny Bubbles?! ^^
N'Sync was more popular, I think, though I am by no means Boy Band historian. ^^ Both have about a handful of songs that I like. There were lots of others out there too. Success breeds imitation, I guess.
The Corrs are awesome! One of my first "world music" discoveries, supported by my Internet friends. Their first big CD called Talk On Corners (Special Edition - USA) is a MUST have, I'd say!
Corrs cover of Jimi Hendrix's Little Wing:
Well shes walking through the clouds
With a circus mind that's running round
Butterflies and zebras
And moonbeams and fairy tales
Thats all she ever thinks about
Riding with the wind.
When I'm sad, she comes to me
With a thousand smiles, she gives to me free
Its alright she says, its alright
Take anything you want from me, anything
Anything.
Fly on little wing,
Yeah yeah, yeah, little wing
Have you got their PC software installed? It only requires a 486 CPU and USB 1.1 I notice. I can't believe that Dino is that old (does he have gray hair??) ^^
I was noticing that it plays videos too! You could take your H!P collection with you on the road! I am starting to do that with my music video collection - convert them to iPod/iPhone video format. Good thing I am experienced at helping deserving souls with technology. :)
Does your digicam make movies? I'd love for you to sing a song with your guitar! You pick the song. And, yes, you can just show your hands, if you are too shy! :)
Beatles love! I am not surprised. Immortal stuff there. They changed the whole music industry. I hardly know where to start. So many songs from different periods pop in to my mine and demand "me! me!" to be mentioned first. lol! I gave the lil' Princesses Yellow Submarine as their first Beatles song on their playlist CD. It was really hard to decide, but with the sound affects and well as the sunny lyrics ("Sky of blue, and sea of green, everyone of us has all we need") it was a natural. And they are on a nautical binge for some reason? ^^
Let me just throw out one more (we could go on forever discussing all their songs, and I wouldn't mind doing so!) The Long and Winding Road is a real favorite of mine.
The long and winding road
That leads to your door
Will never disappear
Ive seen that road before
It always leads me here
Lead me to you door
The wild and windy night
That the rain washed away
Has left a pool of tears
Crying for the day
Why leave me standing here
Let me know the way
John, Paul and George all had very high IQs - John's was like 160(!) Their lyrics and innovative arrangements are simply brilliant!
You are the revelation dear! Your modesty melts me. I look forward to sharing so much with you...
Now, here's your bedtime lullaby... :)
"My Precious One" - Celine Dion
My precious one, my tiny one lay down your pretty head
My dearest one my sleepy one its time to go to bed
Just lie your head and give your cares to me.
Just close your eyes and fall into the sweetest dream in my loving arms.
My precious one my darling one don't let your lashes weep.
My cherished one my weary one it's time to go to sleep.
Just lie your head down and give your cares to me.
Just close your eyes and fall into the sweetest dream in my loving arms.
Your safe as you will ever be so hush my dear and sleep.
And in your dreams you'll ride on angels wings.
Dance with the stars and touch the face of god
And if you should awake I'll send you back to sleep.
Aww, answering you is never difficult!
I posted "I Want It That Way" at the end of this weeks top 100 list for you.
My digital camera does record video and I recorded Jimmie Johnson's qualifying laps at LVMS last March! The problem was that I didn't know how to zoom in so when he's on the back stretch he's really really tiny! :P Hahah my guitars are in hiding!
For awhile I was so obsessed with The Beatles!! Two of my favorite publications on them are "Beatles Songs" and "The Abbey Road Sessions." Actually I'm not sure if that's the correct title of the second one as I lent it to someone and never got it back. :( "Across the Universe" was just released yesterday and I was thinking about purchasing it. The trailers look really amazing and it appears to be somewhat of a musical.
I assume you know how to zoom now? (sorry!) ^^ That's so cool that you did get to "film" there. I thought I saw your guitars gently weeping at not being played by their lovely owner, and starring in your soon to be famous online performances, a la Marie Digby or The Bathroom Girl!
Check out these Japanese SQUARE watermelons!! ^^
And here's an Awesome compilation of Beatles books! @@ I've got a hookup with Sony Pictures, and was looking at that trailer too. So much rich material in the their works! Did you ever see the Sgt. Peppers the Bee Gees did?! (snort)
I think I just heard that there's a NASCAR event in my area soon! Gotta' check that out! :)
Ummm, no. -Actually I just own the single. I liked the song sooo much when I heard it, I just HAD to have it!!!
:-)
(-I hope you're still impressed 'tho...)
;-)
